Sugarcult - Lights Out (CD)

I think the first question that people ask when they hear Sugarcult's new album, Lights Out, is: What happened to Sugarcult? I remember the Sugarcult of songs like “Pretty Girl (The Way),” “She's the Blade,” and “Bouncing Off the Walls.” I remember loving that Sugarcult, and even now when I listen to a mix of those first two cds I still find myself tapping my foot and quietly singing along to the words. Sugarcult hit the US scene after blowing up in Japan in a big way. They were well received because of all of their songs had catchy lyrics, hooky guitar lines, and all out sing-a-long choruses. With Lights Out, Sugarcult have tried to give the appearance that they've grown up, and in the process have dropped almost everything that really made them a stand out pop-punk band.
The album's first track is a fast, hard-hitting, and loud intro called, “Lights Out.” The song serves as a segway from where Palm Trees and Power Lines to the new Sugarcult. It retains a little bit of the singers emotion, and the bands ability to run through power-chord layer guitar parts. After it's forty second run time, we're plunged into a boring, mid-tempo (well, mid-tempo for Sugarcult) track called, “Dead Living.” The beginning of the song is alright, but as soon as it hits the chorus and you hear that vocals have all the passion of a telemarketer, the charm turns toward boredom. The highlight of the album comes in the next track, “Los Angeles.” It's easily the most energetic, exciting track on the record, showcasing a slightly more matured lyrical style, all paired with that classic Sugarcult song of catchy melodies and raspy, emotion filled vocals.
The rest of the album doesn't come close to matching “Los Angeles.” It ends up sounding like a band that got lost in transition. Just a collection of songs experimenting with a more mature style but never quite reaching the balance between what made the band great and what the band wants to turn into. It's clear that they take after bands like Blink-182 and The Ataris (they actually have an old bassist from that band,) but they lack each of those bands ability to translate their classic sound in a new direction. For instance, when Blink 182 transitioned from the sophomoric Take Off Your Pants to the darker, more melodic S/T release, they were able to retain the core of the band. They just took the hooks, the vocals, and the music to a different level.
But let's look at the Sugarcult album from a different angle. At this point it sounds like I'm just reviewing them compared to previous releases, but the album as a whole is just a bunch of mid-tempo songs trying to instill a sense of maturity. But instead of the growth actually showing in the music, it just seems like they're trying to throw it in the listener's face. There isn't a subtle moment of transition from old to new in the album, from the get go Sugarcult is announcing they're dropping the old on this album. Hopefully through touring, the band can harness the sound and perfect it on further releases, but right now they aren't quite there.
